The beginning of October marked the end of one of our programs: Family Educators. Due to reorganization at the state level, the services provided by Family Educators will now be furnished by Easter Seals.
Family Educators has been a part of The Family Place for twenty years. Through this program we provided support to parents who were making efforts to maintain custody of their children, or who were working towards reunification.
When you work with a family, when you witness a family trying its hardest, when you are part of the journey the family travels to become their best, you remain connected long after the paperwork has been filed and the home visits have ended.
To acknowledge the end of this program, in which many staff members had invested a great deal of time, energy, and personal comittment, we shared past stories from the program and held a Reading of the Names at our staff meeting on Monday. As Family Educator Kelly Wallace says of the 264 children – not counting siblings – who were served by the program, “They are the living epitome of resilience and I hope we can honor them. I always hoped I was doing my best by them.” Staff members read aloud the names of children who were supported by our program, and we silently wished all of them lives of peace, security, joy and wonder.

The Family Educator program was a significant part of the parent child center. As is so typical for this organization, you chose a very fitting and meaningful way to celebrate the program and the staff who gave so much of themselves to support the families being served.

The end of the Family Educators Program is indeed a loss for both the families and our organization. As always, programs, funding and families go through their own evolutions. I know The Family Place was indeed a positive force in the evolution of so many families.
